  The Island
Posted by: Aiona - 11-29-2017, 08:18 PM - Forum: Movies & Television - Replies (1)

I also saw a movie on Netflix recently called "The Island." It had Scarlet Johansson, but I didn't realize how old the movie was until I looked it up on IMDB.

It's a Sci-Fi movie, sort of like "Soylent Green" but a bit more modern and cleaner setting.

I sat through it riveted, even though it was around 3 AM by the time it was over. And I had to work the next day. It was that captivating to me.

  I joined Hulu awhile ago

I joined Hulu, and in comparison to Netflix the interface seems clunky. I was getting turned off by this but eventually I found success. What I do is find one TV series and stick with it. Watch it intermittently when I can't find anything elsewhere. First show I watched was Saving Hope, which is a medical drama with a supernatural twist. This series ran 5 seasons, so I was watching it for awhile. Next was a mini-series called Guilt. I binge-watched that one. Now I just started Younger, which is a comedy series about a single mother who pretends to be much younger so she can get an entry-level job in journalism.

  Perfume from Cartoon Characters
Posted by: Aiona - 11-07-2017, 03:57 PM - Forum: Other Topics - Replies (1)

I was in Las Vegas last week, and went shopping at the Stratosphere. There was a shop that sold perfume in the mall, and there were several cartoon character 'fumes. I remember getting a Pokémon perfume sample from a Basenotes member a long while ago (From Redneck Perfumisto). I thought about getting one of those and seeing how they smelled, but they were closed (it was about 11 PM), and the next day, I took my parents to Hoover Dam instead.

I don't usually watch documentaries. However, several people kept telling me to watch this, so I did. Now I know why my godsister was really uneasy about going to Sea World when we were in Florida visiting.

I now live in the Pacific Northwest, and theoretically could see "blackfish" in real life, only I haven't had time to get out on the water much.

I watched this TV series on Netflix too. The premise was interesting, and so I kept watching, and then, I just kept watching because the characters are pretty cool too. It's along the lines of one of my favorite cancelled series "Jericho" but from Earth's orbit, not on the ground. Although they end up on the ground by the end of the first season.

This Is Not What I Expected (2017)
Posted by: Aiona - 11-07-2017, 03:45 PM - Forum: Movies & Television - Replies (1)

Netflix has allowed me to indulge in lots of K-drama (Korean sit coms) and mini-series. I really liked Strong Girl Bong-Soon, but I haven't been able to finish watching because of recent goings-on at my home.

So a two-hour movie is all I have time for these days. And I had to watch it at 3 AM when no one else was awake to scream about it.

"This Is Not What I Expected" is a Chinese movie, I think. Not Korean. And it's subtitled, and yet, there are so many scenes without dialogue (and lots of food), that it's easy to figure out what's going on, even without knowing the language.

It's a rom-com. With food.

I love it.

Moana is a Disney animation/musical that is one of the best I've seen of this genre. I'll probably watch it again.

Goliath is a well-written mini-series with an excellent cast portraying characters that were far from boring. The story is standard one: a formerly top attorney has hit bottom and falls into doing a challenging case that could redeem him. But they played the story in a very different way. I really enjoyed it except for a few spots, but what else is new.

Problem is, it's an Amazon movie, so if you don't have Amazon Prime you can't watch it. At least not yet.

  Gaslight (1944)

Old movie. I watched it because a form of psychological abuse (gaslighting) is named for this drama. Despite the archaic form of acting, I got into this movie enough that it was upsetting me.
