Philly is a TV show that only lasted one year beginning in 2001. I recently watched he whole season via streaming. I thought it was good, and wish there had been more of them. Stars Kim Delaney as a defense attorney.

Halt and Catch Fire is a TV fictional drama about a group of people involved in the dawn of the PC era. The strength of this drama is not the technology or the era. It is the strength of the characters and how they deal (or don't deal) with things. The strongest is a clever salesman who is part visionary and part sleaze, and who manages to manipulate himself into a top position in an electronics company. Then there is the top computer programmer who works there. And a novice (but brilliant) programmer who personifies rock and roll, and is ostensibly the only female programmer there. And some good supporting characters. All the roles are pretty stereotypical. But that didn't bother me because the acting and writing were good.
This one is not simply okay to watch. I was so drawn in I watched four episodes in two days. There are some weaknesses, though. The ongoing story is much stronger than the per-episode stories, and so I get the feeling that it's not going somewhere fast enough. And I wonder how long they can keep me hooked.
FWIW, I'm watching it on Netflix streaming. It has the entire first season.

I watched this last night. I've watched it a few times before. It is probably one of the best movies I've seen in the last 10 years. And even though it's a pretty standard story that draws on the clichés of sport and kung fu genres, it is a case where writing, acting, and artistry all came together in a beautiful way. Probably because all who were involved took the movie very seriously, and added more depth than this type of movie (animated or otherwise) usually contains.

I just got this whole series recently and I sooo loved it.
I thought it was a really neat little series that had moving parts with some spirituality but also made fun of itself too. The characters were flawed, realistic and interesting. I really just loved it. Too bad it was cancelled so qwickly.
It's really funny and also sweet and moving, I thought. They seam to come at ideas from many different angles without really saying: this is the way or this is right, he sort of has all sides be right and wrong. The little interviews with the creator and writer are interesting and worth watching too.

It seems to me that there are fewer and fewer good movies to watch. I don't think it's just me. I noticed that on the new releases, the viewer ratings are lower than ever.

This movie got some tepid reviews and some reviews of high praise. IMO, this movie has a slightly depressive low-burn quality, intermixed with moments of human closeness. It's a biopic that takes place (mostly) in a Hollywood flophouse where teenage Amy Jo Abernathy lives with her father who happens to also be the legendary jazz pianist, Joe Abernathy. What I liked is it was mostly from the POV of the daughter, being around creative people and her father's frequent drug relapses.
I'd post the trailer but the way it's cut makes it look much more dramatic than the movie really is. I enjoyed this movie, but I don't know how many people would.

Beyond the Lights is a story about a glitzy mega-star singer and her relationship with a policeman who has political aspirations and a boy-scout code of ethics. With a setup like this I was ready for a formulaic okay-to-watch ride that might fizzle before the end. Well, it did follow the formula but also transcended it in a special way. I was impressed. I think most of the credit goes to the primary actors. The script was good and never lost its way, but the actors really took it up a couple notches.
Not the kind of movie that wins awards, or makes one ponder the meaning of life. But it is an easy recommendation, nonetheless.
